(1981-1985) Honda Accord Second Generation

The first biggest news of the second generation was the fact that they were now being manufactured in the United States in Marysville Ohio.

A second major event was the announcement that the Accord had become the best selling car from Japan in the United Sates. It held that position for almost 15 years. A Japanese sister car to the was announced and called the Vigor.

Mechanically the second generation was very similar to the original Accord and the first generation vehicle They used the same engine. There were however some interior and exterior modifications made during this generation. A significant major improvement for the Accord was quality control. Starting with a potential rust bucket the Accord became one of the most reliable cars on the United States market. This is a position that it still held in 2008.

Some major features of the second generation Accord were shag carpets, velour cabin trim and some chrome accents. Accord colors available included Silver, sky Blue, and Beige.

A significant difference with Accord from the majority of other foreign models were the head light units. The United States Accord was not allowed to have the aerodynamic molded headlights found outside the United States.

In 1983 a major change was made to the Accord when the automatic transmission was upgraded to a four speed automatic transmission for the first time during this generation. The Accord manual five speed transmission did not receive any changes. In 1983 the Accord speedometer was changed from the earlier federally required 85 mph dial to a more realistic 120 mph unit. The new color Columbus Slate Gray was added to the buyer's choice in paint colors for their new Accord.

Another milestone for this generation was reached in 1984 when Accords sold in the eastern U.S. were produced in Ohio and their quality was judged to be equal to those produced in Japan. This year' generation also saw the horsepower being raised to 80 horse power for the U.S. Accord.

The major changes for the 1985 Accord generation cars included a 110 bhp fuel-injected engine. This was the basic engine design for the Accord generation until 1989. Again new Accord colors were also added at the end of the generation.
