The fifth generation began in 1994 with the Accord changing in dimensions one more time. Now the car was built a little wider and a made a little shorter. These changes were enough to make it now classified as a mid-size car in North America. The United States generation version also retained the familiar DX, LX and EX Accord's trim lines, while other trim lines of Accord were manufactured for other markets outside of the United States.

This generation saw the 4-speed Accord automatic transmission being improved, but the 5-speed Accord manual transmission remained with no changes during the generation. A couple of new safety changes were incorporated in all the Accord trims. These were dual airbags and reinforced side-impact beams. Now the front passenger was offered airbag safety and the car was safer in case of a side impact accident.

In this generation the Accord EX trim line now offered a VTEC version of the Accord 2.2 liter engine, which was rated at 145 bhp. This trim line Accord also was equipped with 15" alloy wheels, it also had 4-wheel disc brakes along with a special antilock feature.

A significant milestone for the fifth generation was that the Accord was named the Motor Trend Import Car of the Year, an honor it duplicated also in later years.This was also the last generation of the Accord wagon in the United States. Many owners were disappointed during this generation by no longer being able to purchase the wagon. By mid generation the Accord coupe and sedan looked almost alike. With the demise of the wagon and the similar looking coupe and sedan the line lost some of its unique appeal.

In 1995 was the introduction of a V6 engine from the Acura Legend for the United States market Accord. This Accord came equipped with a dual-outlet exhaust, it also had a 4-speed automatic transmission, special 15" wheels and a different looking grill, which set it apart from other generation cars.

During this Accord generation we saw were 5 different engines, 3 different models including a coupe, a sedan, and a wagon, along with 2 different transmissions, and changes in body length for all Accord models.

In 1996 all models of the Accord received a mid-generation facelift. This generation changes gave them all a softer look. A major change was while the engine choices remained the same, all of the new engines now met the Federal Government's requirement of OBD II engine diagnostics. Honda has continued to be in the forefront in emission control offerings.

In 1997 the final announcement for this generation Accord was made with the "Special Edition Accord". It came in a choice of only 3 colors: a Heather Mist Metallic, a San Marino Red and a Dark Currant Pearl. Standard features of the Accord included a factory installed security system that used keyless entry, special body colored side molding, a single-disk CD player, unique alloy wheels and a sun roof.
