This generation began in1998 which saw a major modification in the company's strategy for the Accord brand. 3 different models were manufactured and oriented for different world marketplaces. Now the United States generation versions comprised of only the sedan and coupe. One more time the car grew even larger in size. This generation saw the coupe being modified to look different and was offered as a different model from the sedan, rather than being marketed as a two door sedan as it was in former years.

3 different size engines were available for the Accord during this generation along with the standard 2 types of transmissions, a manual and an automatic. The Accord generation sedan in the United States was offered in 5 different trim levels and the Accord generation coupe in 4 trim lines. Horsepower in the 4 cylinder Accord model increased to 150 bhp with a 2.3 liter engine, during this generation, which was available in the LX and EX trim lines. Later an Accord 3.0 liter engine of 200 bhp was used for all of the V6 Accord sedan and the Accord coupe models.

This generation allowed dealer installed options for the Accord EX-V6 which included a gold finish kit, gold finish exhaust tip(s), 6-disc in dash CD changer, a car cover, gold finish wheel center caps, a sunroof visor and accessory chrome wheels. The humble Accord at the start of fifth generation was now getting very fancy and began to really look up scale.

A first for this generation occur ed In 1998 when for the first time Accord keys were now equipped with microchips to immobilize the car. This change was followed in 1999 by the Accord receiving fold able mirrors.

2001 saw both the Accord sedan and the Accord coupe receive a small face lift, which was the last significant change during this generation. The changes consisted of a new front fascia, a change in the side skirts a new rear bumper, different wheel designs and some new taillights. One trim line received a standard CD player and the other trim line received the 6-disc in-dash CD changer which included a cassette player and an automatic climate control. The top Accord EX-V6 trim line for this generation also received a new traction control system, that the driver could and turn on or off.

Over the years the Accord had received an enviable reputation for excellent reliability, however this changed during this generation with the V6 models. Some had transmission failures and some class action law suits were filed against the company. This caused the company to extending the warranties for the Accord models between 1998 and 2002 to seven years or 100,000 miles. This change was designed to help build consumer confidence back in the Accord brand.
