(2008 - Present) Eighth Generation Honda Accord
The eighth generation began in 2008 with the elimination of the Hybrid and them the announcement that in 2009 there would be a new car - the Accord diesel. This is the same version which was unveiled at the 2008 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan.
The company explained that their "hybrid system was working better on smaller cars". So for larger cars a decision was made to go with a diesel offering. They are projection that the new diesel version should offer better fuel economy than the gasoline automobiles and it is 50-state emission compliant. With the world wide economic recession that started in 2008, no one was predicting how many of these diesel vehicles would be sold in this generation.
- The V6 models of the this Accord generation offer increased fuel efficiency because of the Accord Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) system, which can shut off two or three of the cylinders. Traveling at a steady 25 miles per hour or so allows the engine to start shutting down some of the cylinders. Step on the gas and they become active again. The V6 Accord coupe for this generation with the 6-speed manual transmission did not offer the VCM system. Some people are guessing when the coupe might be upgraded to this engine configuration. Perhaps before the generation is over. This generation also started with the the Accord 6-speed manual transmission from the sedan version of the Accord being dropped.
- Safety again played a significant part of the company's design plan in this generation with the Accord introducing standard traction control, a vehicle stability assist and for the first time active front head restraints for all Accord generation models. These new safety features enabled the Accord to receive perfect crash test scores and during this generation receiving a "Top Safety Pick" rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. This is an singular honor most of the Accord competitors are still trying to achieve.
- True to history this generation again saw the Accord growing in size. The significant growth was four inches in total length and three inches in total width. The Accord sedan without moon roof is now considered a full-size car by the EPA standard. This represented a generation first with this classification. With the moon roof the Accord remained a mid-size classification. The Accord coupe did not change and remains classified as a compact car for this generation at least.
After it's introduction in September of 2007 the Accord gathered some mixed reactions which was another generation first. MotorTrend believed that this Accord was too heavy, and not as nimble as the last generation Accord . As a resultt the Accord was rated behind the Chevrolet Malibu in MotorTrend 2008 Car of the Year compition. Car and Driver had a different opinion. They gave the 2008 Accord first in place in a comparison test against the Toyota Camry,
