Add More Power with a Supercharger

If you go to Wikipedia you will find the following definition: A super charger is an air compressor used for forced induction of an internal combustion engine. Wow. Let's take a look at what this really means for your accord.  If your goal is more power from your car,  read on. First a little background information.   As you may know both air and gasoline are  brought, by different devices to the cylinders of an automobile. Then the  pistons  compress this mixture and next the spark plug or glow plug on a diesel engine ignites the mixture. The rapidly expanding fire creates pressure  which in turn forces down the piston and turns the crankshaft and produces power.

Now assume we want more power out of the engine. Putting more fuel alone in the engine will cause too rich of a mixture. You must always have a balance between the air and the fuel.

  •  Air contains oxygen, which is what allows the fuel to burn. The supercharger design forces more air containing more oxygen into the engine, and the fuel system adds additional fuel. You then get a much more powerful  burning in the cylinders and the increase in expanding gases result in more power is produced with the supercharger.   If you want an increase in  power from your engine, putting in a supercharger is one way to go.

.

  •   A supercharger is directly powered by the engine usually with a drive belt. An alternative drive system for a supercharger  systems uses a chain or a gear to drive.

  •   Some potential problems are possible with installing an aftermarket supercharger. If the supercharger installation is not done correctly it can shorten engine life. It is critical to carefully follow all instructions. And ask for help if they are not clear.

  •  A second potential problem with installing a supercharging is the compression ratio of the engine. Generally  a supercharger engine should have a lower compression ratio than a naturally aspired vehicle. The problem is that sometimes the supercharger is added without changing the compression ratio of the pistons. If the original engine's compression ratio was too high, you can cause major damage.

On the other heand, besides an increase in power output, a supercharger may increase your gasoline miliage. This can happen by  adding one to a small car with a small engine,  This is even after the increase in fuel use while the supercharger is compressing the air.
