Aftermarket Parts for your Accord Exhaust System

Different aftermarket exhaust system parts are used on automobiles and each one for various reasons. First is the need for more horsepower out of your car. The second desire is to replace original parts that no longer work with replacement parts. And of course to make your automobile look better.

For performance improvement the key here is to use exhaust parts that will reduce the exhaust back pressure. The exhaust stroke of an engine pushes unburned exhaust air/fuel gases out of the cylinder on its way through the exhaust parts to the outside air. Exhaust back pressure steals some of the power available to drive your car.

Let's discuss the basic exhaust parts that you might want to buy to overcome the restrictions in the stock exhaust system.

  •  First are the exhaust parst called  manifolds. They captures all of the gases leaving the cylinders. It's basic design restricts the flow and causes them to create back pressure. You can replace this device with exhaust headers parts which will reduce the back pressure and restore some lost power.
  •  Next are the exhaust parts called a catalytic converter or "cat". These exhaust parts are designed to reduce harmful gas emissions. Typical stock exhaust catalytic converters also create back pressure due to their internal restrictions and they decrease the high end engine power. An exhaust parts called a Hy-flow catalytic converter can be used which will help reduce back pressure. Almost all catalytic converters will burn or wear out after a while. You will find the OEM versions are more expensive than after market exhaust parts.
  •   Mufflers were designed to lower the sound level of the exhaust gases. Factory installed units will do this nicely but at the price of back pressure.
  •   An alternative to replacing your stock muffler with another stock one is with after market exhaust system parts. After market exhaust parts come in various different designs.
  •   Glasspacks are mufflers which have fiberglass surrounding an inner perforated pipe which is inside your muffler. This design is a good choice for reducing power robbing back pressure. Glasspacks usually result in giving the car a deeper or more throaty sound. Car owners have been known to replace perfectly good stock muffler with glasspacks just in order to get this sound effect. It suggests a much more powerful car with this deep sound.
  •  A second type of exhaust part bis a silencer which has built in  concentric pipes surrounding the exhaust pipe. The design has sound waves bounce off the closed flat ends of the pipe and cause the waves to cancel each other out.
  •   The third type is a resonator which also reduces the sound level. The resonator works by increasing  sections of the exhaust pipe to a larger diameter. The makes the sound waves reflect off the walls of these exhaust parts and cancel each other out.

Deciding if your goal is a great sounding system or a very quite one will lead you to the correct exhaust parts in replacing your stock system when the time comes.
