You can tell because clear coating looks wet in appearance while a gel coating is dull looking. A third question you should ask is was the carbon fiber cloth integrated into the mold or wrapped around the skeleton Carbon fiber parts with the cloth wrapped around the skeleton will tend to break and split easier.
