Choosing a New Cold Air System

Now you have decided that you want more power and that the solution is a better intake system for your car. There are various things you should look for as you are choosing a new system. You should also look at different manufacturers products before you make decide.

  • First figure out if you want a full cool air intake system which will result in the most power increase for your car, but it costs more. It will also be harder to install than a simpler air system. The other alternative is a Short Ram Air Intake system. This system is easier to install, It also is less expensive, but you will not get as much power from you car as the more expensive system.

  • Second, you must figure out  if you might be going through some amount of water while you are driving. Not a just a light rain, but large water puddles. If you are, then you should consider a system, with an air bypass valve. This is a filtered spacer that is positioned more into the engine compartment. It is fitted between two connected pieces of the cool air intake assembly system. This prevents hydro-locking by giving another route for airflow to enter the system. This approach eliminates the vacuum that causes water to be pulled in from a large puddle.

  •   Another further consideration is the basic air filter system that comes with most kits. . A stock filter system ican be restrictive and not totally efficient in keeping out dirt and other small particles. A good replacement intake system will have air filters designed of various materials that will filter out particles in the air as small as .5 to 1 micron. Some air system filters requrie oil, but most air filters will not.

You should also consider a system with a heat shield. The colder the air entering the system is, the more oxygen the air can carry and hence increase power output of your engine. If  the air filter and air inlet is to close to  your engine the more heated air it will draw.   A heat shield may be required. The heat shield wsill help keep the hot engine air from the filter. You can purchase shields that are made from a variety of materials, just like the parts of the rest of the air system.
