Chose an Accord Exhaust Muffler

The major reason for an exhaust muffler is to muffle the loud sounds that are produced by hot gases at extreme pressures as they exit the cylinders of the engine. Loud sounds are a no no in most countries of the world. That is, unless you go to a auto race. Some of these guys don't use sound deadening techniques.

Many different designs for exhaust mufflers have been developed. Each unique design may serve a different purpose. One type of exhaust muffler could be better than another exhaust muffler in reducing the sound level, and another muffler is better in reducing restrictions in the exhaust gas flow. Both of these approaches use techniques which lowers the power output available to drive your car.

•  The first approach is called "absorption". This exhaust muffler is the simplest in basic design. They do a very good job of getting  the hot gases through the muffler, but they do not do a very good job of reducing the sound level. This design has a perforated tube that goes through a larger can or pipe. This pipe is filled with some type of packing materials. These materials usually are fiberglass or steel wool. An improvement in this particular design was to add  another tube that acts as a larger chamber within the muffler. This additional tube helps to reduce the sound.

•   A second type is "restriction". A restrictive exhaust muffler is the least expensive for manufacturing and is usually found as the stock muffler on the typical new car. It restricts the gas flow which makes the flow slow down.slows  When you slow down the flow you reduce the sound level. However this design increases the back pressure on the gas flow which in turn makes the pistons work harder and therefore steals horsepower from your car.

•   A third type of exhaust muffler is called a "reflector". This design reflects the hot gases in the muffler. It is by far the most sophisticated muffler approach. Sounds are a wave function. And the sound waves inside this exhaust muffler bounces from one end to the other end. The result is a wave cancellation, before the waves can exit to the outside air.

Different exhaust muffler systems may use a combination of 2 or all 3 different muffler designs to reduce the gas sounds  before it reaches your ears. Depending upon what your goal is for a replacement muffler is, should guide you in your selection of an exhaust muffler.
