The Honda Accord Generations

The Honda Motor Company does not make major changes to their brands every year. Rather they make generations changes.

When I think of cars I usually picture a unique model. Perhaps the Mercedes Benz Gull Wing, which sold several years ago for less than $100,000 and recently at auction for over $300,000., Another car I sometimes think about was a Ferrari which I saw at a used car dealers store last year. It was a nice blue, two seat sports car. One of the 250 series. Nice price too - $2,500,000 plus tax. Or how about the 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, with 638 horsepower priced at $103,000 which may be the best value for the money  sports car in the world. Or how about the  2009 Mini Cooper with the JCW trim. Listing at just over twenty nine thousand, it represents the most fun you can have in a small car.

On the other hand when I think of vehicles such as the Accord a specific model and year do not come to mind  as much as which Accord generation is it. That's right, we think of a particular generation of Accord. So  you can say you like the fourth generation of Accord and someone elee may pick the current Accord generation.

1976 was the first year of the Accord, and appropriately this was the start of the  first generation, which went until 1981. 2008 introduced the eighth generation of the Accord, which is continuing at least through 2009.

Hard to believe that we are now on the eight generation of Accord in 32 years of being manufactured. This gives us an average a new Accord generation every four years. That means that it might be  2012 until we get the ninth generation of the Accord.

Some significant facts about each Accord Generation

  •  First Generation (1976-1981). Started out with a 3 door Accord hatchback with around 68 bph and  ending with a choice of a 3 speed automatic or an Accord 5 speed manual transmission. Certainly   a significant  Accord  generation start.

  •  Second Generation ( 1981-1985) Saw the first American Accord mfg plant being opened  in Marysville, Ohio. The last car of this generation was the Accord Special Edition,  which offered a modern fuel injected 110 bph engine.

  •   Third Generation (1986-1989). This Accord generation began with a Prelude looking style for the body design. The final Accord model was rated at 120 bhp. A unique event took place with the coupe becoming the first model to be  manufactured  in the USA and then exported back to Japan.

  •   Horsepower was now rated at 140 bph. and there was the introduction of the first Accord wagon was near the end of this generation.

  •   Fifth Generation (1994-1997). The Accord strangely grew in width, but was reduced in length. During this  generation in 1995 the first Accord V6 engine was introduced.

  •   Sixth Generation (1998-2002). The USA  Accord for this generation was only available in a sedan and a coupe.A larger variety of Accord models were available in Japan and Europe.

  •   Seventh Generation (2003-2007). The American models again grew in size, and in 2004 the first  Accord hybrid model was introduced.

  •   Eighth Generation (2008-present) The current generation of Accord saw the dropped the hybrid models. Size again increased by 4 inches in length and 3 inches in width for the U.S. models.
