Choices for an Accord supercharger

If you are in the market for a supercharger you should understand that there is more than one type. There are two main types that you can buy. The two alternatives are classified by the method they user for compression. One is called positive displacement and the other is called dynamic compression.

  •   A positive displacement supercharger delivers a fairly constant level of boost regardless of what the engine is turning. A dynamic compressor supercharger delivers an increasing level of boost with an increasing level of engine speed.

  •   This means that a positive displacement supercharger will deliver a fixed volume of air per each revolution regardless of the engine speed. The supercharger divides the air into even parcels for delivery to the engine. This supercharger moves the air into the engine a piece at a time. A positive displacement supercharger is sometimes further categorized into internal and external compression types.

  •  Over the years there have been a variety of manufacturers who have made a positive displacement supercharger. Some of the major players  are: Roots; Wankel engines, Sliding Vane; Lysholm Screw, and a Scroll-Type. Not all of these designs are available in the auto after market.

  •   A downside of the external compression supercharger is that it can be inefficient at higher levels of boost. This occurs because air is pumped at ambient pressure into the engine. When the engine comes under boost, the pressure at the intake manifold is higher than the pressure coming from the supercharger. This can create a back flow from the engine to the supercharger until the pressures become equal. Though the backflow helps to compresses the incoming air, it is not very efficient.

  •   An internal compression supercharger on the other hand compresses air inside of the supercharger, and then this air can be sent to the engine with little or no back pressure. This is a much more efficient design compaared to the external supercharger approach. Another fact is that an internal compression supercharger must be matched to the expected boost pressure, if you want to achieve high efficiency. If this matching is not done correctly, then this type of supercharger will have the same efficiency problems as the external supercharger. Given a choice, you should be looking at a supercharger design that will give you enough boost for your application, without paying for more than you require or actually need.

Remember that a supercharger installation requires a very experienced amateur or a professional.
