Tips for Installing Your Neon Light Kit
A light kit is the answer to making a statement with your car stand out at night. On the other hand so can a fire if you have installed something wrong. A simple warning first, before we being to discuss on to do an installation. If you are not comfortable with simple hand tools, have trouble following directions or are concerned about electrical safety, please have a professional install any kits you might buy.
Every light kit should come with complete hardware components and full instructions. If your kit does not check the the company you purchased it from to see why it did not. The following suggestions and tips are specifically general in nature and they should be ignored if your light kit instructions instruct you otherwise. Always follow their directions.
- Check to see if you have the following, as most kits will require these basic items in addition to your light kit. A screw driver, or a screw driver blade attachment for your electric drill. Also your drill should have some small drill bits. Heat shrink wrap tubing and some type of heat gun. A pencil or another type of marker. Next is a tape measure. Center punch (self activating if you have one) and/or a hammer. Electric/electronic wire strippers. A soldering gun or soldering iron and solder. Silicon sealant. All of these will help you install your light kit.
- You must have your car jacked up and then you must use jack stands. Never hold up your car by only by the jack. Its better if you have a car host, but most folks do not have one. This is the only way to be safe when you install the light kit.
- The first step is to disconnect the battery before you install the light kit, but this may cause some problems on later model cars. Make sure you heck your owner's manual first before you being to install the light kit.
- A good tip to follow: Any holes you drill on the car when installing your light kit should be plugged with a silicon sealant. A neat way is to put the silicon sealant on the screws before screwing them in. You don't want moisture entering the car because of the holes you drilled for your light kit installation.
- We recommend not to wire your light kit system so that it automatically is switched on when your lights turn on. If you have to do it this way, have a kill switch handy to turn off the light kit. It's a necessary safety precaution if your system overheats or if you have to turn it off for some other reason.
- Depending upon your car and what light kit you purchased, you may have to cut some wires when you install the light kit. If so, make sure when you connect them again, use solder for a good electrical connection. You always want both a good mechanical and electrical connection. Also place a little silicon sealant on the connection, and use the heat shrink wrap tubing over the entire splice. This will help reduce moisture and keep your light kit working correctly for many more years.
Caution: Some local police departments do not like to see visible light tubes. When you install the light kit make sure the tubes can't be be seen from outside the vehicle.
