What's in Your Accord Exhaust System
Sooner or later your exhaust system will start to fail, and you will have to replace it. But you may not be exactly sure what your mechanic is talking about. Well relax you are not alone. Many other folks are in the same boat, trying to figure out what someone is telling them they must purchase..
It is not a hard system to understand. Let's begin at the engine. The engine takes in air and fuel and ignites it to produce power which makes the your car move. Now the problem is we find that not all of the air/fuel mixture was burned up. Also this remaining mixture makes very loud noises if it was just allowed to exit into the air.
What is left are a variety of exhaust gases. The primary purpose of the exhaust system is to get these gases out of the engine and into the surrounding air. However while doing this the exhaust system has to do a several other things at the same time, such as reduce the sound, while removing some of the gases that we really don't want to exit to the surrounding air.
- So let's begin to look at the major components of your exhaust system that were designed for these purposes. The exhaust manifold system is the first part of your exhaust system. This device, usually made out of cast iron, funnels the gas leaving the exhaust ports of the engine into typically one exhaust pipe. On some cars there may be two exhaust manifolds.
- The next system is some exhaust pipes leading to a catalytic converter. The exhaust catalytic converters job is to clean up most of the harmful chemicals from the exhaust gas system, before it gets into the outside air.
- Next there are some more exhaust pipes which lead to one or more exhaust mufflers. As the exhaust system name suggests a muffler, is supposed to muffle or reduce the exhaust gas sound level from the engine. These exhaust gases are under very high pressure which creates the loud sounds. Your exhaust muffler system slows the flow down and reduces the exhaust sound, through a variety of different techniques.
- After the muffler system and additional pipes, some cars will have a resonator system. If you do, this resonator system reduces the sound even more, using a different principle than in the muffler system.
- Once that the sound and most harmful chemicals have been reduced by the exhaust system they are allowed to escape the car. Any of these devices may fail over time. One key reason is water left in a system which causes rust and eventual failure.
