Your Accord May Need a Turbocharger

Your Honda probably does not have a turbocharger, but you may have heard of some of the benefits and were interested in some more information.

  •  If you are reading this, then it is likely you want more power out of your car.  The car manufacturers want to make smaller engines which weigh less and get better gas mileage. But at the same time they needed a way to get enough power out of the engine to satisfy consumer demand. A turbocharger is one of those ways. A turbocharger basically  harnesses the wasted kinetic energy that is dumped out via  the exhaust system and then uses it to force more air into the engine. The turbocharger way is a simple more compact approach to adding power. It can be part of the original engine or an after market accessory.

  •   The turbocharger design consists of the turbo, the compressor, the exhaust manifold for the turbo, a waste gate, a blow-off valve (bypass valve), lines for oil supply and return and the intercooler, which is optional. In an engine the incoming air is mixed with fuel and burned in the combustion chambers in order to produce power. Air contains some amount of oxygen which is what helps the fuel to burn. The more air that goes in the engine the more oxygen is available for making power. And more power is of course the reason for the turbocharger in the first place.

  •   A turbocharger is ultimately the most powerful of all forced induction systems. While a turbocharger increases the amount of air that is moved   into your engine, it has a negative effect on how easily we can move it back out. To do this effectively requires both cam timing and exhaust system design changes to handle the pressure difference introduced by the turbocharger. A well designed turbocharger must also have a way to keep engine away from the cold air coming into the engine. Because cold air is denser than warm air it can carry more oxygen. So by compressing cold air the turbocharger system will help generate more power for your car. Once the air is compressed, it is heated, and some of this heat must be reduced before the air enters the engine. A device called an intercooler for a turbocharger reduces the air temperature on the way to the engine.

So if more power is your goal a turbocharger can be a great option for your car, either as a stock option, or an after market product.
